EXiT 2010-Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan and Asia Forum

Origin:

In September 30th, the Image-Movement Film Association will present a brand new festival: “EXiT 2010 – the Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan and Asia Forum.”

Established in 2000 as a result of theburgeoning film scene, the Image-Movement Film Association not only expanded the audience for appreciating short films, but also advocated short-form filmmaking. As a long-term objective, the Image-Movement Film Association constantly focuses on the possibilities of image creation, such as absorbing concepts and techniques from photography, video art, video installation, CD-ROM’s, new media art, etc. At the outset, we not only organized the “Image-Movement” film festival, we also collaborated with the “Taiwan International Documentary Festival,” “Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival,” and the “Women Make Waves Film Festival.” Moreover, we also curated and organized projects, lectures, and other events, which focused on experimental filmmaking in France, Canada, USA, and the United Kingdom.

Many years of promotional work and curatorial exchanges, the rapid development of a diverse film culture in Taiwan, and the impact of contemporary art practice, have all led the Image-Movement Film Association to head in a new direction – to create and foster a dialogue between creativity, culture, and history.

Three recent events stand out. One of our members, Tony Chun-Hui Wu, was invited to be a part of the international competition committee in the 6th Experimental Film and Video Festival in Seoul 2009 (EXiS). He also organized an experimental media art forum, and presented an essay about the history of experimental film in Taiwan. These events inspired us to create “EXiT 2010 – the Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan and Asia Forum”.

“EXiT 2010 – the Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan and Asia Forum” will have three main themes: International, Asia, and Taiwan. We will invite internationally well-known curators, scholars, and creative artists from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, India, and other Asian countries to present their works or theses. Every participant will bring works from her or his own country for the screenings, which will promote discussion, debate, and hopefully collaboration in open forums with Taiwanese artists and scholars. These unique and cooperative activities are meant to facilitate three primary festival goals: (1) highlight the intra-Asian development of “experimental media art,” (2) examine the greater world legacy of experimental film and its relationship with contemporary art, and (3) place Taiwan within these contexts of film and art. The festival’s emphasis on cultural, artistic, and media exchanges will promote the development of experimental filmmaking and media art in Taiwan and the rest of Asia.

While organizing this festival, the Association has received invaluable support from ExiS (South Korea), the Images Festival (Canada), and the China Independent Film Festival (CIFF China). The Experimental Media Art Festival in Taiwan will forge alliances with other festivals and artistic entities, share ideas, projects, and media, and unite Asian media making by establishing the Asian Experimental Media Arts Alliance.

We support and promote many types of media, including experimental filmmaking, short films, video art, video installations, and interdisciplinary, new media art. The Image-Movement Film Association sees the need for a stable network and context for experimental media and media making in Taiwan. EXiT’s exchanges, connections, collaborations, innovations, and creations with help promote a thriving image era in Taiwan and Asia.
